Our Lebanon Animal Hospital team shares six simple ways to celebrate the holidays with your pet. 

#1: Dress your pet in their holiday best

If your furry pal is willing to wear clothes, dressing up your pet in a festive sweater for the holidays can be an adorable and fun way to get into the spirit. Keep your pet’s comfort and safety in mind when choosing their clothing:

  • Size — Measure your pet’s neck and chest circumference, and their body length. Compare these measurements to a garment label’s size guide to ensure the right fit for your pet’s body type. A sweater or jacket should fit snugly, but not be too tight or restrictive. 
  • Material — Choose a soft material that is also easy to clean. Fleece or an acrylic wool blend can provide your pet with plenty of warmth. 
  • Style — Look for a style that’s easy to get on and off your furry pal. In addition, outfit your pet in a garment that is free of adornments they could chew off and cause them to choke. 

If your pet isn’t comfortable wearing a jacket or sweater, forgo the holiday garment. However, your pet may tolerate wearing a simple accessory, such as a holiday-themed bandana or a jingle bell collar, which can be equally as festive.

#2: Give your pet a holiday treat

Your pet gives you love and loyalty throughout the year, and they deserve a treat to celebrate their good behavior. Put a bag of their favorite treats in a stocking to enjoy on Christmas morning, or bake your pet a healthy, tasty snack to show them how much you care. Many recipes are available online, but do some research to ensure a recipe’s ingredients are pet-safe, and consult our Lebanon Animal Hospital team if you have questions or concerns. Remember, your furry pal’s treat calorie count should not exceed 10% of your pet’s daily calorie intake.

#3:  Take your pet for a festive holiday walk

While your pet may not appreciate the neighborhood light decorations as much as you, they will enjoy the opportunity to get out and explore with their favorite person. Walking with your pet not only strengthens the bond you share, but also helps maintain your pet’s muscle mass, supports their cardiovascular health and metabolic function, and decreases their obesity risk. 

#4: Give your pet a holiday gift

Everyone loves receiving presents, and your pet is no exception. Make the holidays extra special for your furry friend by surprising them with one of these pet-friendly gifts:

  • Interactive toys — Give your pet a new interactive toy that stimulates their mind and entertains them. Puzzle, treat-dispensing, and interactive-electronic toys provide mental stimulation and engage your pet’s natural instincts.
  • A new bed — Spoil your pet by gifting them with a cozy, comfortable bed. Choose options that suit your four-legged friend’s size and sleeping preferences. Some beds come with additional features such as orthopedic support and self-warming properties.
  • Chew toys — Choose appropriately sized chew toys for your pet to ensure they won’t be tempted to chew on your new Christmas presents.
  • Outdoor adventure gear — If your pet enjoys outdoor activities, consider gifting them with gear that enhances these treks. Your furry pal will appreciate a sturdy leash, comfortable harness, and pet-friendly backpack.

#5: Have a holiday movie marathon with your pet

You and your pet can enjoy each other’s company while snuggled up on the couch, watching festive holiday movies. We recommend movies that have animals in them to keep your pet entertained. Light a fire, get out your coziest blankets, and give your pet plenty of pets and belly scratches. 

#6: Give your pet the gift of good health 

While treats and toys are enjoyable, the greatest gift you can give your pet is good health.
